Power did not create Patch.
It revealed what was already there.
For millions of years the Core slept inside the comet’s buried nucleus, and every living ball remained ordinary. Then came The First Pulse. It did not change everyone, and it never produced the same gift twice. In Patch it found a life, a place, and a private truth it could amplify.
The government calls each awakening an unpredictable exposure event. That explanation is useful, but incomplete. Two balls can stand beneath the same pulse and leave it entirely different: one unchanged, one transformed, neither able to explain why. Researchers compare distance, material, emotion, memory, and instinct. The Arena then tests those variables under pressure while the instruments below its floor listen for an answer from the Core. To the crowd, every fighter is a champion or a threat. To the researchers, every fighter is evidence. For Patch, the distinction is personal. Entering the Arena means performing for a world that wants a simple story while confronting a power that was shaped by everything life had already made complicated.
Before the power
Before The First Pulse.
Before The First Pulse, Patch repaired protective wraps, work coats, and emergency blankets in a crowded district near the old crater road. Patch knew every fabric by touch and never threw away a useful scrap. The final bundle delivered before the pulse contained dark cloth recovered from a sealed excavation storehouse, officially listed as ordinary impact-era material.
That earlier life still matters. The Arena may advertise powers, rankings, and spectacular victories, but it cannot erase the ordinary experiences that taught Patch what to protect, what to fear, and what a win is supposed to mean.
The awakening
When the Core answered.
When the Core pulsed, the recovered fabric moved first. It wrapped around Patch, tore through the workshop, and stitched itself into a new body of dark-purple, cream, and faded-red panels. Patch survived, but every seam carried a faint pull toward the crater. Officials marked the workshop destroyed and its repairer missing. Patch stayed hidden for years, quietly mending supplies for displaced neighborhoods, until a rescue during a building collapse revealed the ability to shed charged cloth and gather it back as healing. Government agents offered Arena registration with the familiar choice between cooperation and containment.
Core energy never handed out identical weapons. It amplified environment, instinct, memory, and need. The result was powerful enough to draw government attention—and personal enough that separating the ability from the ball became impossible.
Behind the ability
Who Patch became.
Patch is patient, practical, dryly funny, observant, and instinctively kind to anything damaged. The flaw is self-erasure. Patch repairs everyone else's problems, hides personal pain beneath another seam, and treats asking for help as wasting material. Each patch is kept visible because survival should leave a record, yet Patch fears there may be too little original cloth left to claim an original self.
A power can change how the world sees a fighter without deciding who that fighter becomes. Hero, villain, celebrity, threat: the labels shift with every match. Character is what remains when the Arena lights go dark.
Inside the Arena
Every battle is also an experiment.
Every hard collision tears a loose piece from Patch's cloth body. Rivals can charge those scraps by crossing them, turning discarded damage into something more dangerous. Patch must return, gather each piece, and stitch the stored energy back into the body. At higher stars the trail grows more deliberate: doubled scraps, reinforced seams, and eventually one grand embroidered restitch that draws nearby pieces home.
Patch wants access to the Core Chamber to discover why the oldest threads pull toward a wall that official maps refuse to acknowledge. Winning also means proving that a life held together by repairs belongs to the ball who lived it—not to the government laboratory that catalogued every stitch.
Rivals, allies, unfinished business
No fighter enters alone.
Some histories overlap. Some rivalries began before the first bell. Follow the connections that shape Patch beyond a single round.
The Core Chamber
The question beneath the Arena.
Inside the Core Chamber, Patch's oldest threads tightened into a stitched map. The pattern ended at the same sealed wall Ghost cannot pass through, and one loose end continued beyond it.
Champions are promised access, not ownership. Many have descended. None has received a clear answer. The government records every reaction and publishes almost nothing, while the Core continues to pulse and new powered balls continue to appear.
