Power did not create Glass.
It revealed what was already there.
For millions of years the Core slept inside the comet’s buried nucleus, and every living ball remained ordinary. Then came The First Pulse. It did not change everyone, and it never produced the same gift twice. In Glass it found a life, a place, and a private truth it could amplify.
The government calls each awakening an unpredictable exposure event. That explanation is useful, but incomplete. Two balls can stand beneath the same pulse and leave it entirely different: one unchanged, one transformed, neither able to explain why. Researchers compare distance, material, emotion, memory, and instinct. The Arena then tests those variables under pressure while the instruments below its floor listen for an answer from the Core. To the crowd, every fighter is a champion or a threat. To the researchers, every fighter is evidence. For Glass, the distinction is personal. Entering the Arena means performing for a world that wants a simple story while confronting a power that was shaped by everything life had already made complicated.
Before the power
Before The First Pulse.
Before The First Pulse, Glass was a conservator studying the vast glass fields created when the ancient comet impact fused a desert. Glass catalogued the tiny imperfections that preserved evidence of the forgotten event and argued against government excavation of the site.
That earlier life still matters. The Arena may advertise powers, rankings, and spectacular victories, but it cannot erase the ordinary experiences that taught Glass what to protect, what to fear, and what a win is supposed to mean.
The awakening
When the Core answered.
The pulse travelled through the entire field at once. The surface shattered, flowed inward, and rebuilt around Glass. Since then, accumulated impacts can break Glass into a ring of dangerous shards around a vulnerable heart before the body reforms.
Core energy never handed out identical weapons. It amplified environment, instinct, memory, and need. The result was powerful enough to draw government attention—and personal enough that separating the ability from the ball became impossible.
Behind the ability
Who Glass became.
Glass is precise, dignified, perceptive, artistic, and deeply uncomfortable with pity. The flaw is perfectionism: every crack is treated as evidence of failure, even though rebuilding is the source of Glass's strength. Each reconstruction feels slightly different, raising a private fear that the original self is disappearing piece by piece.
A power can change how the world sees a fighter without deciding who that fighter becomes. Hero, villain, celebrity, threat: the labels shift with every match. Character is what remains when the Arena lights go dark.
Inside the Arena
Every battle is also an experiment.
Glass carries each impact as visible fracture until the body can hold no more. Then comes the full cycle: crack, shatter, dangerous shards, a vulnerable heart, and reconstruction. Rivals see an opening. Glass experiences a question about which returning shape is truly the original.
Glass seeks the Core because its reflections may show whether rebuilding preserves a self or merely produces a convincing successor. The answer matters more than victory, though Glass would never admit how much.
Rivals, allies, unfinished business
No fighter enters alone.

The Core Chamber
The question beneath the Arena.
Each shard reflects a different possible version of the observer. In the Core Chamber, Glass saw one reflection in which the Arena was empty and the sky was not.
Champions are promised access, not ownership. Many have descended. None has received a clear answer. The government records every reaction and publishes almost nothing, while the Core continues to pulse and new powered balls continue to appear.
Arena rumor“One chamber shard reflected an empty Arena beneath a sky that was no longer there.”
