Power did not create Poison Spike.
It revealed what was already there.

For millions of years the Core slept inside the comet’s buried nucleus, and every living ball remained ordinary. Then came The First Pulse. It did not change everyone, and it never produced the same gift twice. In Poison Spike it found a life, a place, and a private truth it could amplify.

The government calls each awakening an unpredictable exposure event. That explanation is useful, but incomplete. Two balls can stand beneath the same pulse and leave it entirely different: one unchanged, one transformed, neither able to explain why. Researchers compare distance, material, emotion, memory, and instinct. The Arena then tests those variables under pressure while the instruments below its floor listen for an answer from the Core. To the crowd, every fighter is a champion or a threat. To the researchers, every fighter is evidence. For Poison Spike, the distinction is personal. Entering the Arena means performing for a world that wants a simple story while confronting a power that was shaped by everything life had already made complicated.

Before the power

Before The First Pulse.

Before The First Pulse, Poison Spike worked in the toxic reclamation trenches outside the old crater zone, clearing industrial runoff and restoring land nobody else wanted. Years of being treated as disposable made Poison Spike fiercely protective of neglected places.

That earlier life still matters. The Arena may advertise powers, rankings, and spectacular victories, but it cannot erase the ordinary experiences that taught Poison Spike what to protect, what to fear, and what a win is supposed to mean.

The awakening

When the Core answered.

The pulse travelled through mineral deposits, poisonous water, and buried comet dust beneath the trench. Spikes formed around Poison Spike's body, and every wall contact began leaving living venomous thorns behind. The government called the area contaminated and removed its residents. Poison Spike believes officials used the awakening as an excuse to seize the land around the nucleus.

Core energy never handed out identical weapons. It amplified environment, instinct, memory, and need. The result was powerful enough to draw government attention—and personal enough that separating the ability from the ball became impossible.

Behind the ability

Who Poison Spike became.

Poison Spike is vigilant, blunt, territorial, and unexpectedly gentle with damaged ecosystems. The central flaw is suspicion: protection easily becomes possession, and anyone entering the crater district is treated as a threat.

A power can change how the world sees a fighter without deciding who that fighter becomes. Hero, villain, celebrity, threat: the labels shift with every match. Character is what remains when the Arena lights go dark.

Inside the Arena

Every battle is also an experiment.

Poison Spike turns the Arena walls into a defended border. Every rebound can leave a short-lived thorn behind, forcing rivals to decide whether the direct route is worth the venom. The style is not flashy aggression; it is territorial patience, the same instinct once used to protect abandoned land.

Poison Spike fights for access to the sealed crater district and the samples removed from it. If the government will not return the land, then a champion’s authority may be the only key left.

Rivals, allies, unfinished business

The Core Chamber

The question beneath the Arena.

Poison Spike's oldest thorns bend toward the buried Core even when cut from the ground. Government researchers collect them; Poison Spike wants every sample returned.

Champions are promised access, not ownership. Many have descended. None has received a clear answer. The government records every reaction and publishes almost nothing, while the Core continues to pulse and new powered balls continue to appear.
